BioT.Scott’s work has been described as whimsical, colorful and thoughtful, a balance of color, patterning and rhythm. His work often explores the subjects of spirituality, relationships and music. T.Scott comes from a family with a rich history in the arts. His grandfather, a jazz musician, met his grandmother, a dancer, in vaudeville. T.Scott is a lover of classic jazz and acoustic blues, which, in turn, shows up as a prominent subject in much of his work. T.Scott received a B.F.A. from the University of North Texas, School of Visual Arts. His work is and has been featured in galleries throughout the United States. He has been listed in Art in America Magazine’s Who’s Who in American Art. Artist StatementAs an artist I am very interested in exploring color, texture and movement. Common subjects of my work include musicians, figure studies, and landscapes. I am influenced by the spatial theories developed by the cubists and the futurists where three-dimensional subjects can be retranslated into a two-dimensional surface (canvas/paper). I find the idea of being able to create multiple views of a subject (both figuratively and literally) very challenging. Technically, I love the spontaneity of working with acrylic paint. Acrylics allow me to react quickly to the mood and essence of my subjects while also allowing me to build the intense color and textures I desire. I tend to ponder my compositions for weeks before ever transferring my thoughts to canvas. Once I begin a painting I start with a composition drawing, add under painting and then layers upon layers of textures and color. Eventually, I will have a feeling that the painting is finished and then I sign it and it’s complete. In my current work I am concentrating on two subjects: abstract landscapes in Mediterranean settings and pure abstracts which I call “Swirling Eddies”. I’ve actually never had the opportunity to visit the Mediterranean, but growing up around the beaches of Florida I have a deep longing for sun and sea. The palm trees, water, landscape and architectural elements create an opportunity for me to deeply explore new textures, color combinations and frenetic compositions which are very important elements in my work. The Swirling Eddies are created by first using a squeegee to apply the initial under painting. Then a pinstripping brush is used to create the spontaneous swirls. I then fill in the negative space with texture and color blends. The process of creating this work is very primitive, cathartic and divine. I feel the results are powerful. I am hoping to increase the scale of this work in the near future. |
